Linus Pauling Scholarship

The Linus Pauling scholarship is in honor of the life and work of Dr. Linus Pauling, two times Nobel Prize winner, in 1954 for Chemistry and in 1962 for Peace. Dr. Pauling was globally admired for his tremendous contributions to chemistry and for advocating peace. Dr. Pauling shared the spotlight in this latter endeavor with Albert Einstein. These scholarships will be awarded for students to attend the Pauling Biotech Symposium or to apply to education related expenses.

The Linus Pauling student award

This student award is named as Linus Pauling student award which will be sponsored by Actokine Therapeutics, a biotech company specializing in drug rescue and new drug indications of cytokines. Cytokines are proteins produced by cells in response to foreign pathogens. All recombinant engineering protein drugs manufactured by successful biotech firms (Amgen, Genentech, Biogen and Serono) are cytokines or antagonists to cytokines.

Applicants need to choose a cytokine (e.g. IL-1a, IL-b, IL-RA, TNF-a, LT-a, LT-b, Apoptosis ligands, any TNF-related proteins, IFN-a, IFN-b, IFN-g, LIF, IL-7, IL-8, IL-10, IL-11, IL-12, IL-18 etc) and submit a short abstract for new therapeutic indications of a cytokine. Selected applicants will be invited to submit a three-page essay with a diagram suggesting a new therapeutic indication for a cytokine.

1st page: introduction to your favorite cytokine (e.g. TNF), showing how it is related to disease(s).
2nd page: a diagram(s) to show how the cytokine works (e.g. signaling of TNF), or its potential mechanism(s) based on known public information.
3rd page: hypothesis, of a new therapeutic indication for the cytokine or antagonist of its action.

Selected students (no age limit) will give a short talk on these three items during the Pauling Biotech Symposium.
